US moves to protect wolverines as climate change melts their mountain refuges, threatens extinction

The Biden administration unveiled a proposal on Wednesday to grant long-overdue federal protections to the North American wolverine. This move comes in response to scientists' warnings that climate change poses a significant threat to the rare species, as it is likely to melt away the snowy mountain refuges that provide vital habitats for these animals. By the early 1900s, unregulated trapping and poisoning campaigns had eradicated wolverines across most of the United States.
